Let's take a closer look at Telegram to find out how far the rabbit hole goes.
Let's start.
Since most people who switch from WhatsApp to Telegram do so for security and privacy reasons, let's start with a security feature. You can configure your Telegram account to automatically delete itself if you are away for a certain period. No more worrying about what happens when you die.
Go to Settings> Privacy &Security and tap on While Away to choose the duration. You can choose a duration like 6 months, especially if you do not use Telegram much. Otherwise, it could be deleted just because you were less active rather than inactive, which we don't want to happen.
If you don't want to be overwhelmed with notifications, Telegram lets you control them. You can send a silent message to your contact if you don't want to disturb them. The recipient will receive the message but will not be notified:no sounds or vibrations.
Compose your message and instead of pressing the Send button, press and hold for a few seconds. This will reveal a hidden menu where you can either schedule a message or send without sound.
Telegram groups and channels can accommodate up to 200,000 users. An active group/channel will have hundreds of posts per day, making it difficult to quickly track who said what. Luckily, admins have the option to enable slow mode, which will force members to wait a certain amount of time before they can send another message.
Open the group and tap Edit> Permissions, then select the duration at the bottom of the page.
This will reduce spam as members will now think before hitting the send button and use one message to say it all instead of splitting it into 2-3 messages.
It opens up the world to you, no matter where you go. Enabling the Nearby feature will allow you to discover new groups and find new people who live nearby. Note that these users and groups must also have this feature enabled.
You will find the option under the Contacts tab. Give location permissions when prompted, and you're all set to make new friends and find cool new local groups.
There are all kinds of bots you can use in Telegram to get things done, set reminders, manage large groups and channels, and retrieve information from the web. You can use bots in personal chats, groups, and channels.
You're probably already using #hashtags on social media sites like Twitter and Instagram to search and filter topics. The same concept works here too. It's easy. Simply tap the search bar and enter a hashtag followed by a keyword to find all posts that use that particular hashtag. It's a great way to filter messages and organize discussions.
Once you enter the hashtag, it's easy to narrow down the search results by usernames and date ranges.
Another cool trick from Telegram. Are you too active on Telegram for your own good? Too many groups and active chat heads? Telegram now lets you organize these chats into folders using tags. Works something like the Gmail labels we use to sort emails and make sense of the landslide ahead.
Open Settings> Chat Folders to create your very first folder. Some common categories might be home, office, NSFW, and hobbies.
You can not only delete sent messages, but also edit them. We've all made mistakes while texting, trying to outrun our thoughts with our thumbs. Interestingly, the editing function is available for up to 2 days, which is more than enough.
Simply long press on the message you want to edit and select the Edit button.
Other messaging apps like WhatsApp allow users to delete messages they've sent (called Unsend), which is cool. Telegram wants to do better by allowing users to also delete messages sent by others. This only works in one-to-one chats, but you can delete any message regardless of age on the plus side.
Press and hold the message to bring up a menu where you will notice the Delete button. By selecting this, you will see two options. ‘Delete for me’ and ‘Delete for me and username’. Both options are self-explanatory and only work in one-to-one chats.
You can search and share GIFs and YouTube videos in groups and channels on the fly. Just type the keyword @vid to find videos on YouTube.
Similarly, you can also search for GIFs by typing ‘@gif keyword’. These are bots we talked about above, but the beauty here is that you don't need to add these two bots before using them. They are universal bots that work everywhere in Telegram, like single groups, channels and chat rooms.
Someone sent you a message and you want to copy some of it, but you can't. This is a common problem with most messaging apps where you have to copy the entire message, paste it into another app, then edit and recopy what you need.
Telegram solves this problem. Just long press on the message to bring up a menu where you can also view the message at the top. Long press the message again and you will notice a selection menu with two bars to partially select the text message. It just works and saves a lot of time.
Telegram is full of useful features that will help you in ways you never knew possible. And they keep adding more as new users discover the joys of using this amazing messaging app. So, what's your favorite Telegram trick? Share with us in the comments section below.
