The first thing you need to do is go to the Twitter widgets page. If you are logged in with your Twitter account, then it will already show you a sample widget with your user ID. You can adjust the size and appearance of the widget. There are a few options, like choosing a light or dark theme, setting the widget height, choosing the link color, etc. By default, the width of the widget adjusts automatically so you don't have to worry about it. Once you are done with the widget look and feel, click the "create widget" button.
To add this Twitter User Timeline widget to your WordPress, copy the widget code and go to your WordPress admin area Appearance »Widgets . Drag and drop a text widget into the sidebar and paste the Twitter widget code inside it. Save the widget changes and preview your site.
You should be able to see a live preview of your recent tweets widget. If everything looks good, then you are done. Congratulations, you have successfully added recent tweets to the WordPress sidebar. If you want to add it to any other area of your site, such as a WordPress post or page, simply paste the widget code into the content area of your Wordpress post/page, and it will work the same way.
But wait, there's more. The Twitter widget page not only allows you to create a timeline of your recent tweets, it also allows you to display the timeline of your favorite tweets, lists, and a hashtag or keyword search. If you want to do that, then the steps are pretty simple.
Go to the Twitter widgets page. Instead of using the User Timeline tab, which is selected by default, click the other tab, such as favorites, lists, or search. Then configure the settings by selecting your favorites list, hashtag, etc.
The steps from this point on are pretty straightforward because they are the same as the user timeline widget. For favorites, the settings are exactly the same as for the user's timeline widget. For lists, you must select the list you want to include. For search, you need to add the hashtag you want to display.
One of the biggest advantages we see when using a recent tweets “user timeline” twitter widget is that it has a Follow @username button that allows you to access your account with 1 click. Plus, it allows users to tweet mention you directly from your site (now that's pretty cool).
We hope this article helped you easily display recent tweets in WordPress using the official Twitter user timeline widget. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to let us know by leaving a comment below.
